Tom Butler is a British big wave surfer. On 14 December 2018 he was towed into a wave at Praia do Norte that he believed was close to 100 feet, about 30 metres. If that had been confirmed, it would have been the first 100-foot wave ever ridden.
The WSL didn't accept the claim, and officially the 100-foot wave has still never been surfed. Butler's ride is one of the reasons people keep asking the question every winter.
